Steelcase needs no introduction in the world of office chairs. In fact, the Steelcase brand has risen to the top of the office furniture industry and has been recognized by reputable institutions. Because of this, many like to compare the Steelcase Think vs. Gesture, as both are considered solid options from the brand.

Steelcase Gesture vs. Think: While both the Steelcase Gesture and Think offer similar adjustment options, the Gesture provides more freedom via the armrests adjustments and a more complete seat-depth adjustability. Additionally, the Gesture chair has a slightly taller backrest than the Think chair.

Nevertheless, there is more to this comparison than just mere appearance alone. In this post, we are going to compare the Steelcase Gesture vs. Think chairs and find out which one tops the other. At the end of the day, you can expect to buy either Steelcase office chairs to make your office space more comfortable.

Tale of the Tape

Steelcase Gesture

  • LiveBack Technology
  • Fully adjustable backrest and armrests
  • Multiple color and material options

Steelcase Think

  • LiveBack Technology
  • Adjustable backrest and armrests
  • Multiple color and material options

Let us do a quick overview before going into the comparison. At first glance, both chairs look futuristic and modern. And yes, both are far from the typical office chairs in most offices. This is a testament at how Steelcase is one of the best in the industry. This includes the warranty and customer service as well.

The Steelcase Gesture is a chair powered by LiveBack Technology. Because the backrest is taller than most office chairs, it provides ample support for your entire back, including the lower back (lumbar). If you are taller and enjoy having full back support, then the Steelcase Gesture chair maybe for you.

The Steelcase Think Chair also features LiveBack Technology in the backrest. Steelcase claims that Think is the chair that understands how you sit and adjust itself intuitively. This unique characteristic provides the Think chair with more flexibility and freedom when you sit, especially for longer hours.

With the quick overview out of the way, let us move into the Steelcase Think vs. Gesture chair comparison. Both chairs offer exceptional value and are excellent investments for your health, especially if you need to sit at work. To help you compare the two chairs, we will review them based on three categories:

  • Adjustability
  • Comfort
  • Build Quality

Disclaimer: We understand that our reviews are not facts and only express our opinions based on our personal testing with both chairs. Reviews are always subjective by nature. Nevertheless, we will do our best to be as honest as possible to help you buy the right chair. With that said, let’s get started.

1. Adjustability

Steelcase Gesture

With almost every adjustability option available, the Steelcase Gesture is loaded and is the Swiss Army knife of office chairs. Only back height adjustment is missing from this chair. After all, there is a reason why the Steelcase Gesture is one of the best ergonomic office chairs in our humble opinion.

One feature that caught our attention is the Seat Slider Function. This allows you to slide the seat forward and back, accommodating short and tall people. While making this adjustment can be strange in most office chairs, the Gesture does a good job of making it easy because it has a knob that you can easily turn.

Steelcase Think

The Steelcase Think is also a loaded chair and comes with the same adjustable features as the Gesture. However, there are two areas where the Think is inferior to the Gesture: the seat depth and armrests. While you adjust the seat depth of the Think chair, they do not have the same range of motion as the Gesture.

Moreover, there are limits to how much you can adjust the armrests of the Think chair, whereas the Gesture allows complete freedom. While the Think chair has completely adjustable armrests, the Gesture beats it by offering 360-degree armrests movement. However, the Think’s adjustability is enough to beat most chairs.

WINNER: The Steelcase Gesture wins the adjustability category. While the Think chair offers numerous adjustable features, the Gesture chair edges it out by providing better versions of the same features. Nevertheless, the Think chair’s adjustability is more than enough to beat most office chairs in the market.

2. Comfort

Steelcase Gesture

The Gesture has a comfortable seat, back, and armrests, three of the most important aspects of a comfortable office chair. Having compared the Leap vs. Gesture, we like Steelcase’s ability to create comfortable seats without thick padding. Even if you prefer thick padding, you may find comfort in the Gesture.

Steelcase Think

Right off the bat, what caught our eye is how breathable the Think chair is, especially if you customize it into the 3D Knit material version. Similar to mesh, this unique material provides more airflow, all the while creating a lighter version of the chair. What it lacks in padding, it makes up for it with breathability.

WINNER: In terms of comfort, it is a tie between the Gesture and Think. Each chair caters to different users. If you like a taller backrest that provides better sitting posture, then the Gesture is for you. However, if you prefer a modern-looking office chair that is breathable and cool, buy the Think chair.

PRO TIP: Steelcase creates excellent choices of top-notch office chairs. Two of them are the Steelcase Leap and Think, both often reviewed next to each other by many ergonomic enthusiasts to confirm which chair is better. Check out our in-depth comparison if you want to consider other options.

3. Build Quality

Steelcase Gesture

Surprisingly, the Steelcase Gesture is made up of many plastic components. Do not let this fool you, though, as the chair is solid and well-built. Most of the plastic components were either used for flexibility in the chair’s backrest or to cover metal components. In fact, the chair is finished well and fits together nicely.

Steelcase Think

With the focus on providing excellent airflow to its users, the Steelcase Think is also a well-built chair. There is no denying the quality and durability offered by Steelcase office chairs. However, because it is designed as a lower-priced chair than the Gesture, it is obvious that the latter is superior to the former.

WINNER: The Steelcase Gesture claims another point, this time in the build quality category. In most cases, you get what you pay for. Steelcase designed the Gesture chair to be more expensive for a reason. The 400 lbs.  weight capacity speaks volumes about how durable the Gesture chair is.

Final Verdict

WINNER: Steelcase Gesture

Steelcase Gesture

  • LiveBack Technology
  • Fully adjustable backrest and armrests
  • Multiple color and material options

Steelcase Think

  • LiveBack Technology
  • Adjustable backrest and armrests
  • Multiple color and material options

And there you go, the complete comparison and review of the Steelcase Gesture vs. Think chair. You simply cannot go wrong with either chair as both are simply excellent. After all, there are plenty of good reasons why the two of them are included in our best office chairs for lower back pain top five list.

If you have the budget, we recommend buying the Steelcase Gesture chair. With better versions of adjustable features, the Gesture is slightly better than the Think chair. It is hard to argue the excellent design offered by Steelcase. However, if you want to save more money, go buy the Think chair. 🙂
